Why a Pre-2012 blog?

My "Perspectives of a Wandering Geographer" blog includes stories that were written and posted since 2012.  However, I'd like to post some of the stories, essays, and reports that I wrote prior to that time.  I think it would be too confusing to post "old stuff" with my contemporary writings.  So, this new blog will feature blasts from the past.  

I had thought of publishing stories in chronological order over the course of my life.  I'm not going to do that and will lead off with stories and letters written from southern Africa in 1986-87.  During that time, I travelled extensively (mostly by train) in South Africa with side trips in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Lesotho.  I also had a one-year teaching position in the Environmental Science Department at the University of Botswana.

  UB Environmental Science Computer Room Some of my weekends here in Gaborone are full of activities which keep me in good spirits.   This Friday, for example, I went to a TGIF party put on by the American “community” in Gabs.   There I met some American friends who invited me to come over to their place to watch old Humphrey Bogart movies on their VCR.    The Botswana Defense Force’s marching band provided entertainment at the national team’s football match with Mauritius on March 28.   On Saturday afternoon, two American friends, David and Kent, walked with me to the new national stadium to watch a football (soccer) match between Botswana’s national team and the Indian Ocean island nation, Mauritius.  The game was bloody boring:  the final score, 0-0.  Other than that, it was a big deal for Botswana as it was the first international competition held at the new stadium.  Even Botswana President Quett Masire was there.  We saw him...

Thursday-Friday, 5-6 June 1986: An Amazing Employment Opportunity!!!

June 6, 10:00 AM, Thornhill Government Guest Flats, Gaborone, Botswana Yesterday, I stumbled into an amazing, serendipitous opportunity.   While I had found my barroom conversations in Gaborone with the two British accountants very informative, I wanted to get some additional perspective on Botswana from local residents.   So, I took a walk to the campus of the University of Botswana hoping to meet a geography professor or two for a chat.   I stopped at the administration building and explained to the receptionist that I was an American geographer travelling through Botswana and was wondering if they had a geography department at the university.   No, they didn’t but they have an environmental science department.   I figured that was close enough having worked in environmental consulting for several years.   Were any of the environmental science professors around that I could perhaps meet?   The receptionist wasn’t sure because final exams were about...

Monday, 14 July 1986: Watching White School Boys Taunt Black Children

  I get up at first light before the little monsters.   A black janitor is sweeping trash in the corridors.   The teen-age munchkins made quite a mess last night.   To avoid being trampled by kids, I go down to the end of the last car where I can take photos in peace.   We are stopped in Queenstown.   Mountains are all around.   Nice setting.    South to Cathcart.   Great countryside.   Two 1 km long tunnels before we get into the town.   Some good photo opportunities. Cathcart is located at the foot of the Amatola Mountains for which our train (the Amatola Express) is named.   We stop for a few minutes at Thomas River, a black township, where I witness an ugly scene.  It’s feeding time at the zoo.  Several little black kids (probably 5 to 7 years old) scamper around outside the coaches begging.  The white school kids laugh and laugh.  They throw biscuits, pennies, etc. at them and watch them grovel and...
